A Custom Kitchen Upgrade—Focused on One Area at a Time—in a Jacksonville Home

Many homeowners want to upgrade their kitchen—but not at the cost of disrupting their entire lives.

That was exactly the situation in this Jacksonville home. The homeowner loved her kitchen’s solid white oak cabinets. They were well-built, functional, and full of character. What she didn’t love were the cabinet doors, the outdated desk area, and the lack of modern features like soft-close doors, pull-out storage, and under-cabinet lighting.

She wanted a more modern look and better day-to-day functionality—without tearing out cabinets or living through a major remodel.

When the Details Matter More Than the Layout

The vision was clear:

  • Keep the existing solid oak cabinets
  • Turn an unused desk area into a functional coffee nook
  • Upgrade the coffee nook with the new look she wanted and well built modern upgrades
  • Paint the cabinetry a deep blue

But finding the right solution turned out to be more complicated than expected.

The Color Match Problem

The homeowner knew exactly what blue she wanted. She had a Sherwin-Williams color swatch that she loved—but none of the cabinet companies or home stores could match it precisely with pre-built cabinets.

She was concerned that choosing a “close enough” cabinet color would create problems later, especially when ordering new cabinet doors or making future upgrades. She wanted confidence that everything would match—not something that looked almost right.

Custom work was the only way to guarantee that result.

Storage Challenges That Off-the-Shelf Solutions Couldn’t Solve

The homeowner also wanted pull-out shelves for better access and organization. However, there was a structural constraint: the cabinet doors needed to extend all the way to the wall edge to eliminate the look of a filler strip she disliked.

That design choice reduced the usable interior width of the cabinet. Standard pull-out drawers—especially the metal ones commonly sold online—would only allow about ¾-width storage.

She had already tried several store-bought metal pull-outs in the past and wasn’t impressed. They were flimsy, noisy, and didn’t feel like they belonged in a well-built kitchen.

Once again, a custom solution was the only option.

A Thoughtful Custom Cabinet Solution

We designed and built a custom cabinet to integrate seamlessly with the existing kitchen.

The project included:

  • Custom cabinet construction sized precisely for the space
  • Painting the cabinet to match the exact Sherwin-Williams blue the homeowner chose
  • Installing soft-close doors for a quieter, more refined feel
  • Building custom pull-out shelves sized to maximize usable storage
  • Eliminating filler strips while maintaining clean door alignment
  • Fabricating a custom butcher block countertop with a hard-wax oil finish for long-term durability

The butcher block finish provides protection against moisture and daily use while remaining easy to maintain and repair over time.

Small Electrical and Finish Upgrades That Made a Big Difference

Because the space was being reimagined as a coffee nook, we also addressed several small but important details:

  • Used an existing light socket to add under-cabinet lighting
  • Removed an old landline connection and repaired the drywall
  • Replaced the old outlet with USB charging for modern convenience
  • Replaced the old light switch with a smart switch that provides an automatic night light in the kitchen

These details helped the space feel intentional, polished, and designed for how the homeowner actually lives.

From Outdated Desk to Coffee Nook

Originally, the space contained an old desk with a bookcase above it—functional, but unused. By rethinking the area and layering in thoughtful upgrades, it became a dedicated coffee nook that the homeowner now uses every day.

It wasn’t a full kitchen remodel.
It was a targeted, custom upgrade that respected the existing home while making it feel more personal and enjoyable.

Why Custom Kitchen Upgrades Matter

This project is a great example of how custom cabinetry and thoughtful planning can deliver meaningful improvements without uprooting daily life.

Instead of replacing everything, we focused on:

  • Preserving what already worked
  • Solving specific design and storage challenges
  • Matching materials and finishes exactly
  • Creating a space that feels special—not generic
